Siddhivinayak Siddhatek, Temple

Siddhivinayaka of Siddhatek village in the Karjat Taluka of Ahmednagar District in Maharashtra is the second Ganesha temple in the sequence. It is known as Siddhivinayaka because Bhagwan Vishnu acquired Siddhi (special powers) here. It is also believed that since the god fulfills every wish of his devotees, he is called the Siddhivinayaka. This is the temple where the trunk of Bhagwan is turned towards the right. Such Ganesha is called Siddhivinayaka because he fulfills the wishes of the devotees. However, in such temples, extreme purity and divinity are maintained.
The temple is around 200 kilometers from Pune, on the banks of river Bhima. The temple stands on a small hill called Siddhatek. People perform a Pradakshina around the hill seven times to please Bhagwan Ganesha.
The main idol is around three feet tall, and it is the only idol amongst all eight with the trunk at the right side. It makes Siddhivinayaka special.
It is believed that the two saints Shri Morya Gosavi and Shri Narayan Maharaj of Kedgaon received their enlightenment here.
The temple is North-facing and is on a small hillock. The main road towards the temple was believed to be built by Peshwa's general Haripant Phadake. The inner sanctum, 15 feet high and 10 feet wide is built by Punyashloka Ahilyabai Holkar. The idol is 3feet tall and 2.5feet wide. The idol faces North-direction. The stomach of the murti is not wide, but Riddhi and Siddhi murtis are sitting on one thigh. This murti's trunk is turning to the right. The right-sided-trunk Ganesha is supposed to be very strict for the devotees. To make one round (pradakshina) around the temple one has to make the round trip of the hillock. This takes about 30 minutes with moderate speed.
Peshwa general Haripant Phadake lost his General's position and did 21 Pradakshina around the temple. On the 21st day Peshwa's court-man came and took him to the court with royal honor. Haripant promised the God that he will bring the stones of the castle which he will win from the first war he will fight as the general. The stone pathway is built from the Badami-Castle which was attacked by Haripant soon after he became the general.
This temple is situated off the Pune-Solapur highway about 48 km from the town of Srigonda in Ahmadnagar district. The temple is situated next to Bhima river. On Pune-Solapur railway, Daund Railway station is 18 km from here.
Significance of this temple is The Ganesha icon here is with his trunk turned to the right. Usually, the trunk of Ganesha is depicted turned to his left. It is believed that the right-trunked Ganesha is very powerful, but difficult to please. This is the only Ashtavinayaka shrine where the deity has his trunk to the right.Traditionally, an icon whose trunk is to the right is named "Siddhi-Vinayaka",the giver of siddhi ("accomplishment, success", "supernatural powers").The temple is thus considered as a jagrut kshetra where the deity is said to highly powerful.
The Mudgala Purana narrates that at the beginning of Creation, the creator-god Brahma emerges from a lotus, that rises the god Vishnu's navel as Vishnu sleeps in his yoganidra. While Brahma starts creating the universe, two demons Madhu and Kaitabha rise from the dirt in Vishnu's ear. The demons disturb Brahma's process of creation, thereby compelling Vishnu to awake. Vishnu battles the battle, but cannot defeat them. He asks the god Shiva the reason for this. Shiva informs Vishnu that he cannot succeed as he had forgotten to invoke Ganesha – the god of beginning and obstacle removal – before the fight. Therefore, Vishnu performs penance at Siddhatek, invoking Ganesha with his mantra – "Om Sri Ganeshaya Namah". Pleased, Ganesha bestows his blessings and various siddhis ("powers") on Vishnu, returns to his fight and slays the demons. The place where Vishnu acquired siddhis was thereafter known as Siddhatek.
The major festivals are Ganesh Chaturthi in the month of Bhadrapada and Ganesh Jayanti in the Magha month.

About Siddhivinayak Siddhatek, Temple

Siddhatek Ganpati is a holy place where God Vishnu, Maharshi Vyas and Bhrushundi, Morya Gosavi, and Narayan Maharaj attained Siddhi.

The history of Siddhatek Ganapati says that Lord Vishnu built this auspicious temple. It was later destroyed over time. Once a cowherd got the darshan of this temple, and he ultimately found the idol of Siddhi Vinayaka. The cowherd began worshipping the deity from then on, and this temple became popular.

Sardar Haripant Phadke was the commander-in-chief and an official of the Peshwa rulers. He built the Nagarkhana, which was the place to store Nagaras. He also constructed a pathway to the Siddhatek Ganpati Mandir. He used to worship Bhagwan Ganesha for 21 days and had 21 pradakshina to the temple daily.

Ahilyabai Holkar, the great ruler of Indore, was very religious. She built the Siddhivinayak Temple Siddhatek in its present form. Saint Morya Gosavi and Narayan Maharaj worshipped at the temple where they attained Siddhi. They belonged to The Ganapatya Sect, a Sect of saints that worships Ganesha as the Supreme God.

It is believed that it is a place where Bhagwan Vishnu performed Tapasya to get a boon from Bhagwan Siddheshwar Ganesh. Sant Moraya Gosavi from Chinchwad and Sant Narayan Maharaj from Kodgaon also performed tapasya here.

The place Siddhatek is believed to be the place where Vishnu ultimately achieved siddhi and thereby killed the demons Madhu and Kaitabha who he had been battling for a thousand years. Long ago, Deity Brahma thought of creating Nature and for that, he ceaselessly chanted the mantra “OM”. Ganesha was delighted with the penance and gave him the boon that he will fulfill the wish of creating Nature. When Deity Brahma was creating Nature, Vishnu fell asleep. Demons Madhu and Kaitabh emerged from Vishnu’s ears. They started harassing all the Gods and Goddesses. Deity Brahma realised that only Vishnu will be able to annihilate these demons. Vishnu tried his very best to kill them, but failed. He then stopped the battle and took the form of Gaankushal Gandharva and began singing. Shiva when he heard the celestial notes of the Gandharva, summoned him. Vishnu then told Lord Shiva about his unfinished battle. Shiva told him thatsince he had not sought the blessings of Ganesh his task had remained unfinished. Shiva asked Vishnu to recite the Shadakshar mantra (Ganeshaya Namah) and in order to achieve what he wanted.

Vishnu choose the Siddhkshetra to complete the ritual of propitiating Ganesh. Ganesh granted Him his wish. Vishnu then created a four-door temple on the hillock and installed the statue of Gajanan. Since Vishnu achieved siddhi here, Ganesh was called the Siddhivinayak and the place was called Siddhatek or Siddhkshetra.

Deity Brahma got the energy to create Nature with Ganesh’s boon. Lord Ganesh accepted the two daughters of Lord Brahma as his wives.

In time, the temple created by Vishnu perished. It is believed that a shepherd saw Ganesh here and started worshipping Him. He then found a priest to conduct the worship and ultimately it was during the rule of the Peshwas sometime that the present temple was erected. The Siddhivinayak Temple is along the Bhima River which flows southwards. One remarkable thing about the river is that however rapid its flow, it does not make any sound while flowing.
