Grishneswar Jyotirlinga Temple

The temple structure was destroyed by the Delhi Sultanate in 13th and 14th-century. The temple went through several rounds of rebuilding followed by re-destruction during the Mughal-Maratha conflict. It was rebuilt in the current form in the 18th century under the sponsorship of queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, after the fall of the Mughal Empire. It is presently an important and active pilgrimage site of the Hindus and attracts long lines of devotees daily. Anyone can enter the temple premises and its inner chambers, but to enter the sanctum sanctorum core (garbha-gruha) of the temple, the local Hindu tradition demands that men must go bare-chested.

About Grishneswar Jyotirlinga Temple

There is a legend prevalent about this Jyotirlinga which is as follows. A Brahmin named Sudharma lived with his wife Sudeha near Devagiri mountain in the southern country. The only trouble in his life was that he had no children. Even after several attempts, the cries of the child could not be heard in his courtyard. Then Brahmin's wife Sudeha got her husband married to younger sister Ghushma. Ghushma was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. She used to make 100 earthly Shiva's every day and worship them with full devotion and devotion and then immerse them in a pond. Bholenath had great grace on him. In course of time she gave birth to a son. There was an atmosphere of happiness and gaiety in the house with the arrival of the child, but the happiness received from Ghushma did not go down well with her elder sister Sudeha and she became jealous of him. His son started nagging Sudeha and one night Sudeha got an opportunity and killed her son and threw him in the same pond.Due to this incident there was mourning in the whole family, everyone started mourning, but Shiva devotee Ghushma had full faith in her devotion, she was worshiping hundred Shivlingas in the same pond like everyday without any sorrow and lamentation. Meanwhile, he saw his son coming back from the pond itself. It was all to the glory of Lord Shiva that Ghushma found her dead son alive again. At the same time Shiva himself appeared there and appeared to Ghushma.God wanted to punish her sister but Ghushma begged God to forgive her sister because of her good conduct. On the prayer of his exclusive devotee, Shiva asked Ghushma to ask for a boon, then Ghushma says that I want you to settle here forever for the welfare of the people. In order to immortalize the name of the devotee in the world, Shiva said that I will be known here as Ghushmeshwar by the name of my devotee. Since then it is worshiped as the last Jyotirlinga of Shiva in the world.
