Prayag Shaktipeeth is located in Allahabad (ancient name 'Prayag') in Uttar Pradesh. There are differences of opinion regarding the locations of this Shaktipeeth in Allahabad. Here three temples are considered as Shaktipeeths and all three temples belong to the Shakti 'Lalita' of Prayag Shaktipeeth. Sati's finger had fallen in Prayag. It is believed that the fingers of the mother were 'Akshayvat', 'Meerapur' and 'Alopi'. Had fallen at places. The Shakti of this Shaktipeeth is 'Lalita' and Bhairav is 'Bhav'. There is also a temple of 'Laliteshwar Mahadev' near 'Kalyani-Lalita Devi Temple' in Akshayavat Fort. Among the 108 Shaktipeeths mentioned in Matsyapuran, the name of the goddess here has been given as 'Lalita'.

In Durgasaptshati it is said that Hridaye Lalita Devi, that is, Mother Lalita resides in the heart of every living being. According to the legend, when Sati could not bear the insult of her son-in-law Lord Shiva by her father Prajapati Daksh, she got angry and immolated herself in the Yagya Kund. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he started roaming around in anger carrying his dead body. To remove Lord Shiva's attachment to Mother Sati, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body with his Sudarshan Chakra. The 51 places where Sati's body parts fell after being separated from the Chakra were revered as Shaktipeeths. Due to the fall of Sati's wrist in Prayag, Rajarajeshwari, Shivpriya, Tripura beautiful mother Lalita Devi appeared along with Bhaya-Bhairav. Here, Mother Goddess Mahakali is present in the form of Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati.
